Smelly Spelling Giveaway and Freebie!

· ·
I know you have seen Smelly Markers on other blogs for classroom use..and I finally found my own set  at Michael’s during the school year.  My kids LOVED them!
Getting that smiley face on their paper took on a whole new fun, smelly meaning.
It started me thinking about how I could use the markers to infuse excitement into some of my literacy stations.  I decided spelling is one of those things in my writing station that can always use a fun twist to the routine.  And that led to Smelly Spelling!
And a fun giveaway.
You can win my Smelly Spelling Pack AND 5 Scentos Smelly Markers and a 6pack of
Sweethearts Candy Smelly Markers.
All you have to do is leave a comment
below telling me what else you
would use the markers for in your classroom.
I will use random number generator
to choose a winner. Giveaway ends Sunday
June 17th at around 9pm!
Giveaway is now closed! =)
I have more recently been able to find the markers at Walmart in the craft department.
Don’t forget to get your freebie page for smelly spelling by visiting the TPT listing and clicking
“download preview”
*I tried to offer a variety of pages with different amounts of spelling words,as I realize not everyone has just 10 words…Those of you who have 10 may not need or use all the pages…and those of you with more than 10 words may want to duplicate a page and put it on the back.  Although I tried to accommodate different amounts, the basic pack is made ideally for 10-15 spelling words.*
Hope you love it!
For complete contents, check out the listing on TPT or TN!

  1. I love smelly markers! I let my student of the week pick a smelly marker and help me mark off Daily 5 checklists. I would also use them to grade papers and I think they would be fun to help highlight repeated words or main ideas of a sentence.

  2. I have been looking for these markers EvErYwHeRe with no luck! I'd love to win them~and the fun pack!
I would use them during interactive writing so that the kiddos could use them when it is their turn to write:)

  3. Mr. Sketch brand smelly markers come in thin line and thick line. I use them for writing sight words for the kiddos to carry around.

  4. These markers would be great as an incentive for good behavior. I could make a smiley face or star on their calendar each time they have a great day…they would love this!!

  5. Mr. Sketch brand smelly markers come in thin line and thick line. I use them for writing sight words for the kiddos to carry around.

  6. I have heard people talk about these before, but have never seen them anywhere. I will most definitely have to look because not only do the kiddos love smelly markers, but I do as well hehe. It would be neat to have the leader of the day use them to do different things all day and then daily switch out the leader or weekly. Also they would be neat to do rainbow spelling with as a center time activity.

  7. I have 3 special students in my room next year. I would let them use the markers to write in their journals to encourage writing. (They strugglewith writing anything other than their names!)If I don't win I am going to hunt these markers down for my Daily 5!

  8. Smelly markers are the best! I use them to write our morning message, which I post on the wall at the level of the kids. I love it when they walk up to the chart paper and sniff each word and tell me what everything smells like!

  9. I hadn't heard of these before- they look really neat. I definitely dig your idea of using them for word work. If I had to think of another use for them, I guess I'd use them in writer's workshop when the kids had to infuse their writing with the five senses. Whenever they added a particular smell to their story, they would write it in that particular marker. Reminds me a little of that old book, The Sweet Smells of Christmas.

  10. I've never seen the Sweethearts markers! I have a few Scentos and have used those for smileys on great work and as incentive on a few hands of kids who are working well. I had never thought of using them for 'rainbow writing', but that is definitely a possibility next year!

  11. Love these! I was thinking of using them for write/read the room. I found them at WM in kind of odd places hanging on those little strips. I saw them in the office supply section at one WM and in the snack isle of all places in another WM. My 4 year old spotted them as I was hurrying by. 🙂
    Good Luck!

  12. My kids pick from the best behavior book when they either make it to the top of the clip chart or earn 10 aggie bucks and trade them in. One of the incentives they can pick is super supplies and they get to use markers all day…so they would really love it if they smelled good too!

    ckt.todd@gmail.com

  13. I think the question is, What couldn't you use them for? lol
Kids can find any number of reasons why using scented markers is "necessary." And let's not forget the Smencils too.
    Love this package!

  14. Wow – I need more time to read through all of the ideas already mentioned. I hope I'm not repeating.

I want to do a mystery unit this year. To spark interest, something will go missing in the classrom. Students will have to find and solve the clues to catch the culprit. The smelly markers would be a great way to lead to different suspects (each suspect could be associated with one scent). I hope that makes sense!

  15. What a fun idea!! Another way I would use the smelley markers would be as an incentive for using good handwriting. I would pick 2 kids a week who have been using great handwriting and let them complete some of their handwriting/writers workshop time using the smelly markers!!

  16. These are soo cute! Have only found one, but I keep looking!! 🙂 I would use them to make super star smiley faces on behavior sheets for our communication folders. They would be fun to give the "queen or king" of the day to use or as a birthday treat! Hope I win some!! 🙂
    My Kindergarten Kids

  17. My first graders would live these! I think they would be fun to use during writers workshop/:interactive writing! Thanks so much for all of your fun ideas!

  18. I think these would be great as a Word Work choice- when they finish their other work they could use these to practice their spelling/sight words. Or math facts after they finish a math tub. I also think they would jazz up a guided reading lesson. Let kids underline sight words or find phrases.

  19. I am so jealous. I have been searching everywhere for those markers. I currently use Mr. Sketch for my Anchor Charts, grading papers, special notes, etc. If I find these markers, I was planning on using them as an incentive for writing their name on their papers. I would set them up at my turn in table and if they have their name on their paper they can make a smiley face next to their name. If not, then they have to write their name in colored pencil.

  20. I have a two of the Scentos markers. I use them to mark/grade papers and the kids LOVE when I do this! I think another great idea would be to put them out in the writing center and let students use them to edit their writing. They could use a different color for capitalization, another for punctuation, etc.

  21. I would love to use them for writing on students work and also allowing them to use them for word work or other activities like that!

  22. I also found a pack at our teacher supply store, but I'm holding off until the school year gets closer to starting, Maybe for a reason…? 🙂 I would use them as a positive behavior incentive, but for student-use. They would be something students with excellent behavior could elect to use in our "illustrator's corner" (a literacy station). Thanks for the opportunity!!

  23. I would love these SMELLY markers!! I would use them with our printed decodable books. We usually highlight the sight words and vocabulary words for the week, and this would make it extra fun to have my kiddos underlin them with a smelly marker. I HOPE I WIN 🙂

  24. ooooooh! Pick me! Pick me! Oh yeah, I forgot, teachers don't pick the ones who aren't quietly raising their hands. I would also like to use these markers as an alternative to smellies (chapsticks) as rewards. They would love that they can even see it! Thanks for the chance!

  25. I use markers to check papers! We also use markers to make all of our anchor charts! Then kids love to use markers in their reading and math notebooks 🙂

  26. WOW! A lot of comments! I have not heard of these markers, so I'm glad you said they were at Wal-Mart! I would love to have these to use for those reluctant writers in 2nd grade! What a great incentive! Thanks for the chance to win these – and your freebie. Thanks for helping other teachers with your creative resources. THANKS!!

  27. Ooh these take me back to elementary school art class! Our teacher had the Mr. Sketch markers. In my classroom the students always circle their best letter or word when we practice handwriting. These would be great for that! 🙂

  28. My Kindergartners LOVE using smelly markers! I would use them in my writing center, but I also like the idea of using them for shared writing! Thanks so much for the chance to win the markers AND the Smelly Writing pack.

  29. Love, love, love smelly markers!! My students love them and it brings back great memories from my school days 🙂 I would use the markers during word work so a small group of kiddos can rainbow write their sight words. I'd also use thm as rewards for students who have clipped up throughout the day on my clip chart.

  30. There are so many uses I could use the smelly markers for. I LOVE the spelling pack. I would also use them for a behavior rewards pack, and for sight words as well. There are some great ideas!

  31. Smelly markers are so much fun! I would use them for their weekly word wall words…right now they are in love with highlighers so smelly markers would we AWESOME! I use smelly stickers on their work now…smells are so much fun!

  32. Who doesn't LOVE smelly markers?! My kids go crazy for them….they only come out for special projects, but I like the idea of using them for word study 🙂 I also use them for interactive writing.

  33. I remember those fabulous smelly markers when I was a little girl! I would use them for grading papers, writing positive notes home, and for rainbow writing. Thanks for bringing back a real cool item!

  34. I haven't used smelly markers for YEARS, but had been thinking about them again in terms of reward/paper correcting. However, I think I would like kids to start using them again-helping reluctant writers trace/try new sight words, name practice (kinders here) and for matching games!

  35. I use smelly markers for a TON!! I Love them! To start off the year I have students "sign in" when they arrive each morning in smelly marker. Great for handwriting practice 😉

  36. I would use the smelly markers on special occasions in the writing center~after they write a letter in pencil, they could go back over it with marker. Just to keep them a little more engaged!

  37. I love these! I never saw these smelly markers before….but I think that I would use the markers for sight words along with spelling words….

  38. Thanks for this opportunity. I've looked for these without success. I would use them at guided reading and also word workstation. I'm sure if I did have them in my room, I would find tons of other uses. Thanks!

  39. I love all the fantastic ideas! Cannot wait to try them next year!
I would use them as a game for sight words.
I would call a child up and say, "this word smells like strawberries" and they would have to smell the words and then tell me what the word is.
You could use this as a center game as well where they write down the words that have the certain smell (maybe make a worksheet with the fruit pictures on it and they write the word next to it for practice)
I'm going to really brainstorm over the summer. 🙂
    Thanks!

  40. I love smelly markers! My fabulous 3rd grade teacher used them and we all loved them! So I promised myself I would use them as well when I write on their papers, etc. They go crazy over them just like I did 23 years ago 🙂

    sunburst541@gmail.com

  41. Checking work with smelly markers is such a great idea! The school I volunteer at sells Smencils (Smelly Pencils) but sometimes it drives me nuts because the kids are constantly smelling them! Having them at a station or only for the teacher to use is such a great idea.

I think I would use them for a morning activity like morning message or guessing bag. Especially in K, they could guess the smell and write it on a piece of paper.

  42. I would definitely use them as a reward for good behavior or random acts of kindness. Students would get to write with them the entire day! I think they would love it and it might get me through some of the harder days when behavior is off the charts!

  45. My kiddos love using the smelly markers to put a check mark on papers as they check off homework.
The student of the day gets to check off everyones spelling work also.

  46. I have so many thoughts in my head that I'm not sure exactly how I would use them. I think mainly for highlighting during guided reading, writing sight words at literacy centers and as a positive reinforcement. Would love to have some and will probably go buy some no matter what. Thanks for the motivation.

  47. I remember that one of my favorite teachers had these when I was in 3rd grade, and I knew I had to have some too when I became a teacher someday. Well 18 years later I spotted them at WM, but then I just put them on my desk and gazed at them! Thank you for the great ideas and motivation! I think I'll also use mine for their behavior box at the end of each day. I can't wait!

  48. I love your ideas! I haven't had any luck finding these markers where I live, but I do use the Sketch ones in my classroom. We make class charts with them, and the kids absolutely LOVE the smells! I also bought smencils (smelly pencils) for my class one year and they were a huge hit too!

  49. I LOVE LOVE LOVE these markers! (Maybe even more than my kiddos! I found some at Wal-Mart one day and got super excited, you would have thought someone just gave me amazing news!) I use them in my classroom to check papers. If I won an extra set I would use them in my writing center.

  50. Love me some smelly markers when I walk around checking work! I found some very inexpensive ones at Dollar General and they were great! I also bought some by by Roseart at Walmart……and only 2 of the 8 smelled 🙁
    Just love smelly markers!!

  51. I use smelly markers to place a check mark on top of their station work if they have completed it. I also use them to draw a star if they finished seat work or passed their test. My students LOVE them!! 🙂

  52. I use Mr Sketch for charts, but the kids love to use them, too. These would be a great way to get students to practice sight words.

  53. I looked for some today at Wal-Mart and sadly they didn't have them… but had Scentos bubbles! ha
This pack looks awesome!!! I would use the markers for spelling practice (rainbow writing) and we do a quick check in math each day and we usually check this together since there are only 5 questions, so these would be perfect for the kiddos to grade those with! 🙂

  54. We LoVe smelly markers in my first grade classroom!!!! I use them when grading their writing; we use a smiley face as a formative assessment tool. A circle means they attempted the writing and/or wrote the appropriate number of sentences needed, eyes = capitals, nose= periods, smile= spacing. Soooo, the more they get correct the more smiley face they get which means…..MORE SMELLY MARKER ON THIER PAGE!
    rachaelrsterling@yahoo.com

  55. I LOVE my smelly markers. I never share them with the kids, ha, ha! Actually, I buy a new pack every year and the old ones go into the kids bucket. They last forever! If I won, I'd share with the kids-with BRAND new markers! That would be a first!

  58. I absolutely love your blog layout! I am a huge fan of bright eye catching things.

I also teach first and a lot of the times my kiddos will not be in the writing spirit and worry about how long their writing should be. These markers may be a great incentive for writing. With each sentence you switch scents. Or if you're peer editing they'd be good for that. Students could pick their own markers or you could assign scents for periods, capitals, etc.

    Very cute packet!

    Brenda

You Might be a First Grader…

  59. I use them when making anchor charts and grading papers. Sometimes I will have circle time and the kids will use them during class participation. They love participating when the markers are involved.

  60. I would use them when writing notes to my students… for writing new sight words… when kiddos fill in the blanks in morning message… I am so excited!

    MsAmyMc{at}gmail{dot}com

  61. I would use them for interactive writing and for grading student work. I know the Mr. Sketch ones are at our Office Depot, because I always get a pack during their teacher appreciation sale before school starts. ksmith_727@yahoo.com

  62. I would use them for grading papers, and let the students use them once a week for name spelling. Then as the year went on, I would use them for other things such as the students writing the time, or their address or phone numbers!

  63. I would use them for grading papers, art's and crafts, writing, the possibilities are endless! The wonder's my class could use with these. Thank you for the opportunity!

  64. Cool giveaway! I would use the smelly markers for when we do 'word detective.' It's when tthey look for capital letters, end marks, spelling patterns, sight words, etc. Right now they use different. Colors and symbols, but it would be a fun twist to do with smelly markers! Especially with poems and rhyming words. – Heidi V.

  65. I'd love to use them as one of my "free" incentives. I have a "grab-bag" this is for students who want to take their chances at a prize instead of looking in the treasure box. Inside I have things like, take off your shoes for the day, change seats with someone for the day, etc. This would be cute to add in there – write with a smelly pen for the day. Thanks for sharing your ideas and for the opportunity to win!

  66. Oh my, SMELLY MARKERS!! Fun, fun, fun!! I would definitely use them as an incentive for fantastic behavior for the week. Spelling centers, looking through their journal entries and circling nouns, adjectives…..or whatever it is we are talking about that week. The sky is the limit…….. 🙂 I got a little excited!! I'm going to have to look for these.

  67. I use the smelly markers to make shared writing anchor charts. It adds fun to every kind of writing! I hope I win 🙂 I really enjoy following your blog and thanks for sharing such neat ideas! You rock!

  68. What a cute idea! I never thought to let my kids use the smelly markers, I've just used them myself for charts and marking paper. I usually get mine at teacher stores or staples.

HOWEVER, now you have me thinking… what about letting the kids use them to comment on their peers writing papers. Pick different colors 1 for what the like and another for what they need to fix or improve.

Kids can also use them to work on identifying vowels, blends, or other parts of words by color coding them.

  69. I love the smelly markers!! I was going to start my hunt for some so that I could use them when checking papers. Markers are easier than stamps or stickers and it makes it so much more fun because they smell delicious!!!

  70. I LOVE the smelly marker idea, it is fantastic! I am always looking for new ways to jazz up spelling practice. This year my kids enjoyed "typing" their words before they wrote them on a printed out copy of a keyboard. 🙂

  71. I love this idea! I would probably use it in my Writing Center to encourage the fun of writing! They definitely have so many uses! I would also have my students use them during Daily 5.

  72. I so remember scented markers from when I was in elementary school, I have searched and searched to find similar ones but have not been successful. I would most definitely use these for getting children to use all their senses to be more descriptive writers. I would also use them as an incentive for students.

  73. I love the smelly markers! I would use them for projects for the kids, or even to highlight something in a different way on an anchor chart! You could use different smells for different concepts or subjects!

  77. I love using smelly markers for interactive writing. My kiddos always wait their turn patiently, so they can get a good whiff off that smell 😉

Your pack looks great! Would be a nice Word Work choice!

  78. I've never heard of these until now! But if they are like the Mr. Sketchy scented markers, I know my kiddos will love them! The students could use them during guided reading groups when practicing their sight words or new vocabulary words. I also could use them as incentives for positive behavior.

  79. OOO… just thought about using them with my behavior clip chart system. When my kiddos make it to the top of the chart they receive a stripe on their clothespin. They would have a blast with a scented stripe!! They try and earn all the colors of the rainbow!!!

  80. my whole team LOVES smelly markers and our kids are OB.SESSED!! i would totally use these for a smelly sight word center, for the leader of the day, or for our clip chart reward!
    keep smilin' …AND smellin'!!

  81. These markers look like a fun addition to my making words and spelling center. I would also use them as an incentive to write responses during my guided reading groups.

  82. I would have students use them to underline/circle phonics patterns or high frequency words in their student copy versions of our phonics reading books…I was using highlighters this year but this seems like more fun

  83. I LOVE smelly markers! I have a small tub of them for my kids to use for write the room. They use a clip board and their choice of smelly marker to write as many words as they can fit on the page. We call it Stinky Writing! The icon on the centre board is a little skunk! The kids LOVE this! I would love to win because my markers are about done! I need to buy more for next years group of kids.

  84. I have not seen these before, but I know the kids would love them. I would love to win the markers and your Smelly Spelling. I would use them for Word Work or for writing we do during Guided Reading. I also think these would encourage kids to write in their Draft Books during Writer's Workshop. When I taught 3rd and 4th grades, I had the kids use one color for the beginning, another color for the middle, and a third color for the ending. They could do the same with these and it would be more fun.

  85. These markers sound awesome! I am moving from fifth to first grade. I would live to use these for morning meetings when we go through our morning message.

  86. I would love to win these!!! I would use these for shared writing, grading papers, and marking folders at the end of the day. I'd probably use them in some sort of staff meeting to just to keep me entertained as I'm taking notes-LOL!
    What a fun giveaway!!!

    How Cute Is This!

  87. I would possibly use them with my reading groups when we practice writing sentences…my kids always love using markers for this, but I think they would love it even more with smelly markers!!
