Smelly Spelling Giveaway and Freebie!

I know you have seen Smelly Markers on other blogs for classroom use..and I finally found my own set  at Michael’s during the school year.  My kids LOVED them! 
 Getting that smiley face on their paper took on a whole new fun, smelly meaning.  
It started me thinking about how I could use the markers to infuse excitement into some of my literacy stations.  I decided spelling is one of those things in my writing station that can always use a fun twist to the routine.  And that led to Smelly Spelling!
And a fun giveaway.

*I tried to offer a variety of pages with different amounts of spelling words,as I realize not everyone has just 10 words…Those of you who have 10 may not need or use all the pages…and those of you with more than 10 words may want to duplicate a page and put it on the back.  Although I tried to accommodate different amounts, the basic pack is made ideally for 10-15 spelling words.*

  4. I love smelly markers! I let my student of the week pick a smelly marker and help me mark off Daily 5 checklists. I would also use them to grade papers and I think they would be fun to help highlight repeated words or main ideas of a sentence.

  10. I have heard people talk about these before, but have never seen them anywhere. I will most definitely have to look because not only do the kiddos love smelly markers, but I do as well hehe. It would be neat to have the leader of the day use them to do different things all day and then daily switch out the leader or weekly. Also they would be neat to do rainbow spelling with as a center time activity.

  13. I have 3 special students in my room next year. I would let them use the markers to write in their journals to encourage writing. (They strugglewith writing anything other than their names!)If I don't win I am going to hunt these markers down for my Daily 5!

  14. Smelly markers are the best! I use them to write our morning message, which I post on the wall at the level of the kids. I love it when they walk up to the chart paper and sniff each word and tell me what everything smells like!

  15. I hadn't heard of these before- they look really neat. I definitely dig your idea of using them for word work. If I had to think of another use for them, I guess I'd use them in writer's workshop when the kids had to infuse their writing with the five senses. Whenever they added a particular smell to their story, they would write it in that particular marker. Reminds me a little of that old book, The Sweet Smells of Christmas.

  17. I've never seen the Sweethearts markers! I have a few Scentos and have used those for smileys on great work and as incentive on a few hands of kids who are working well. I had never thought of using them for 'rainbow writing', but that is definitely a possibility next year!

  23. Love these! I was thinking of using them for write/read the room. I found them at WM in kind of odd places hanging on those little strips. I saw them in the office supply section at one WM and in the snack isle of all places in another WM. My 4 year old spotted them as I was hurrying by. 🙂

  25. My kids pick from the best behavior book when they either make it to the top of the clip chart or earn 10 aggie bucks and trade them in. One of the incentives they can pick is super supplies and they get to use markers all day…so they would really love it if they smelled good too!

  48. Wow – I need more time to read through all of the ideas already mentioned. I hope I'm not repeating.

    I want to do a mystery unit this year. To spark interest, something will go missing in the classrom. Students will have to find and solve the clues to catch the culprit. The smelly markers would be a great way to lead to different suspects (each suspect could be associated with one scent). I hope that makes sense!

  49. What a fun idea!! Another way I would use the smelley markers would be as an incentive for using good handwriting. I would pick 2 kids a week who have been using great handwriting and let them complete some of their handwriting/writers workshop time using the smelly markers!!

  51. These are soo cute! Have only found one, but I keep looking!! 🙂 I would use them to make super star smiley faces on behavior sheets for our communication folders. They would be fun to give the "queen or king" of the day to use or as a birthday treat! Hope I win some!! 🙂

  58. I think these would be great as a Word Work choice- when they finish their other work they could use these to practice their spelling/sight words. Or math facts after they finish a math tub. I also think they would jazz up a guided reading lesson. Let kids underline sight words or find phrases.

  59. I am so jealous. I have been searching everywhere for those markers. I currently use Mr. Sketch for my Anchor Charts, grading papers, special notes, etc. If I find these markers, I was planning on using them as an incentive for writing their name on their papers. I would set them up at my turn in table and if they have their name on their paper they can make a smiley face next to their name. If not, then they have to write their name in colored pencil.

  60. I have a two of the Scentos markers. I use them to mark/grade papers and the kids LOVE when I do this! I think another great idea would be to put them out in the writing center and let students use them to edit their writing. They could use a different color for capitalization, another for punctuation, etc.

I also found a pack at our teacher supply store, but I'm holding off until the school year gets closer to starting, Maybe for a reason…? 🙂 I would use them as a positive behavior incentive, but for student-use. They would be something students with excellent behavior could elect to use in our "illustrator's corner" (a literacy station). Thanks for the opportunity!!

  69. I would love these SMELLY markers!! I would use them with our printed decodable books. We usually highlight the sight words and vocabulary words for the week, and this would make it extra fun to have my kiddos underlin them with a smelly marker. I HOPE I WIN 🙂

  77. Ooh these take me back to elementary school art class! Our teacher had the Mr. Sketch markers. In my classroom the students always circle their best letter or word when we practice handwriting. These would be great for that! 🙂

My students love them and it brings back great memories from my school days 🙂 I would use the markers during word work so a small group of kiddos can rainbow write their sight words. I'd also use thm as rewards for students who have clipped up throughout the day on my clip chart.

  97. I haven't used smelly markers for YEARS, but had been thinking about them again in terms of reward/paper correcting. However, I think I would like kids to start using them again-helping reluctant writers trace/try new sight words, name practice (kinders here) and for matching games!

  107. I love all the fantastic ideas! Cannot wait to try them next year!
    I would use them as a game for sight words.
    I would call a child up and say, "this word smells like strawberries" and they would have to smell the words and then tell me what the word is.
    You could use this as a center game as well where they write down the words that have the certain smell (maybe make a worksheet with the fruit pictures on it and they write the word next to it for practice)
    I'm going to really brainstorm over the summer. 🙂

  109. Checking work with smelly markers is such a great idea! The school I volunteer at sells Smencils (Smelly Pencils) but sometimes it drives me nuts because the kids are constantly smelling them! Having them at a station or only for the teacher to use is such a great idea.

    I think I would use them for a morning activity like morning message or guessing bag. Especially in K, they could guess the smell and write it on a piece of paper.

  114. I would definitely use them as a reward for good behavior or random acts of kindness. Students would get to write with them the entire day! I think they would love it and it might get me through some of the harder days when behavior is off the charts!

  119. I have so many thoughts in my head that I'm not sure exactly how I would use them. I think mainly for highlighting during guided reading, writing sight words at literacy centers and as a positive reinforcement. Would love to have some and will probably go buy some no matter what.   121. I remember that one of my favorite teachers had these when I was in 3rd grade, and I knew I had to have some too when I became a teacher someday. Well 18 years later I spotted them at WM, but then I just put them on my desk and gazed at them! Thank you for the great ideas and motivation!   122. I love your ideas! I haven't had any luck finding these markers where I live, but I do use the Sketch ones in my classroom. We make class charts with them, and the kids absolutely LOVE the smells! I also bought smencils (smelly pencils) for my class one year and they were a huge hit too!

  136. I looked for some today at Wal-Mart and sadly they didn't have them… but had Scentos bubbles! ha
    This pack looks awesome!!! I would use the markers for spelling practice (rainbow writing) and we do a quick check in math each day and we usually check this together since there are only 5 questions, so these would be perfect for the kiddos to grade those with! 🙂

  137. We LoVe smelly markers in my first grade classroom!!!! I use them when grading their writing; we use a smiley face as a formative assessment tool. A circle means they attempted the writing and/or wrote the appropriate number of sentences needed, eyes = capitals, nose= periods, smile= spacing. Soooo, the more they get correct the more smiley face they get which means…..MORE SMELLY MARKER ON THIER PAGE!

  150. I absolutely love your blog layout! I am a huge fan of bright eye catching things.

    I also teach first and a lot of the times my kiddos will not be in the writing spirit and worry about how long their writing should be. These markers may be a great incentive for writing. With each sentence you switch scents. Or if you're peer editing they'd be good for that. Students could pick their own markers or you could assign scents for periods, capitals, etc.

  158. Cool giveaway! I would use the smelly markers for when we do 'word detective.' It's when tthey look for capital letters, end marks, spelling patterns, sight words, etc. Right now they use different. Colors and symbols, but it would be a fun twist to do with smelly markers!   160. I'd love to use them as one of my "free" incentives. I have a "grab-bag" this is for students who want to take their chances at a prize instead of looking in the treasure box. Inside I have things like, take off your shoes for the day, change seats with someone for the day, etc. This would be cute to add in there – write with a smelly pen for the day.   167. What a cute idea! I never thought to let my kids use the smelly markers, I've just used them myself for charts and marking paper. I usually get mine at teacher stores or staples.

    HOWEVER, now you have me thinking… what about letting the kids use them to comment on their peers writing papers. Pick different colors 1 for what the like and another for what they need to fix or improve.

    Kids can also use them to work on identifying vowels, blends, or other parts of words by color coding them.

  175. I so remember scented markers from when I was in elementary school, I have searched and searched to find similar ones but have not been successful. I would most definitely use these for getting children to use all their senses to be more descriptive writers. I would also use them as an incentive for students.

  200. OOO… just thought about using them with my behavior clip chart system. When my kiddos make it to the top of the chart they receive a stripe on their clothespin. They would have a blast with a scented stripe!! They try and earn all the colors of the rainbow!!!

  225. I LOVE smelly markers! I have a small tub of them for my kids to use for write the room. They use a clip board and their choice of smelly marker to write as many words as they can fit on the page. We call it Stinky Writing! The icon on the centre board is a little skunk! The kids LOVE this! I would love to win because my markers are about done! I need to buy more for next years group of kids.

  230. I have not seen these before, but I know the kids would love them. I would love to win the markers and your Smelly Spelling. I would use them for Word Work or for writing we do during Guided Reading. I also think these would encourage kids to write in their Draft Books during Writer's Workshop. When I taught 3rd and 4th grades, I had the kids use one color for the beginning, another color for the middle, and a third color for the ending. They could do the same with these and it would be more fun.
